As I write this article, I am reminded of the recent building collapse in Plateau State, which resulted in devastating losses. This incident underscores the need for urgent action to prevent similar tragedies in Kwara State. The State Government, COREN (Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria) Ilorin Chapter, Town Planning Authority, and Ministry of Housing must join forces to prioritize safety in construction projects.

The steady rise in building collapses in Nigeria over the years is a critical concern that requires evaluation by construction professionals. Several factors contribute to building collapse, including:

– Engagement of non-professionals in construction processes
– Use of unskilled labor
– Unsafe practices
– Outdated design/building codes
– Inferior building materials
– Lack of adequate supervision
– Professional negligence

To address these challenges, regulatory bodies must ensure professional conduct, monitor construction activities, and evaluate existing buildings’ structural integrity. While building collapse casualties may be minimal compared to other accidents, it still requires attention to eliminate the hazard and mitigate its economic impact.

As the saying goes, “Make hay while the sun shines.” Let us take advantage of this moment to prioritize safety and prevent building collapses. By working together, we can ensure that our buildings are safe, durable, and meet international standards.

Government agencies responsible for regulating construction activities must take proactive measures by visiting new site areas such as Asa Dam Road behind the House of Assembly, Okolowo, Harmony Estate, Warah, and others to ensure compliance with building codes and regulations.

Furthermore, these agencies must shun bribe collection and prioritize the safety of lives and properties. Corruption has no place in the construction industry, and we must work together to eliminate it.

To combat these challenges, we must organize conferences, seminars, and trainings to update professionals on modern construction trends. Regulatory bodies must work with governments to demolish buildings unfit for human habitation.

By working together, we can prevent building collapses in Kwara State, ensuring safe, durable, and internationally standardized buildings. Let us take proactive measures to safeguard lives and properties.
