The Legislative Council of the University of Ilorin Postgraduate Students’ Association (POGSASS) has inaugurated Abdullahi Ishaq Toyin (Path-Finder) as the substantive President for the 2021/2022 session.
The inauguration ceremony which took place today at the University of Ilorin Postgraduate Boardroom had in attendance the Dean of the Postgraduate School, Prof. Moji Bakare Odunola, the outgoing Sub-Dean, Prof. Sunday Aderibigbe, the new Sub-Deans, Dr Sijuade Adebayo and Dr Lukman AbdulRauf, the PAR of the Postgraduate School, Mr Abdulrahman, members of the outgoing Administration led by Comrade Adegoke Abass, members of the Independent Post Graduate Electoral Commission (IPEC), Stakeholders, among others.
In her remarks, the Dean of the UNILORIN Postgraduate School, Prof. Moji Bakare Odunola commended the outgoing administration for their undying commitment towards improving the welfare of the students by ensuring a conducive learning environment and the improvement of the teaching and learning facilities.
While congratulating the winners of the election, Prof. Bakare advised them to work as a team, admonishing the Executive to always work together with the Legislative Council to avert a crisis, even as she also urged the President of the Association to carry all the members of his team along in his decisions to avoid division within their rank.
Earlier while delivering his valedictory speech, the outgoing President, Comrade Adegoke Abass extolled the Dean of the Postgraduate School for her readiness to always meet with the students’ body and eagerness to solve their issues, as he also congratulated the newly elected Executive and advised them not to go against the constitution that guides the Association to have a successful tenure.
In his inauguration speech, the new POGSASS President, Comrade Abdullahi Ishaq Toyin, appreciated the Dean and Sub-Deans for their continuous support for the successive administrations, while promising to raise the bar of representation by ensuring the survival and betterment of the Association in all ramifications.
He pledged to offer purposeful and impactful leadership by advocating for the needs and concerns of the students, attracting federal scholarship opportunities, ensuring the establishment of a Postgraduate Research Centre as well as enhancing the academic and professional opportunities for members of the Association.
“In the coming months, our administration shall focus on its set goals. We will work closely with the University administrators and policymakers to ensure that our voices are heard and concerns are addressed, as we are committed to developing the skills and knowledge needed for our members to succeed in their chosen fields.”
In his bid to ensure that his administration lays a foundation for a responsible, responsive and intellectually-oriented Association, the new POGSASS President, Ishaq announced the appointment of Aliu Ahmad Gold (of the Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies) as his spokesperson and Special Adviser on Media, Publicity and strategy while Durodola Oyindamola Akano would serve as the Special Adviser on Special Duties.
Meanwhile, other newly inaugurated Executive members include Abdulkareem Habibat Omobolanle (Vice President), Omolounnu Adekunle Emmanuel (General Secretary), Ajiboye Habeeb Adewale (Welfare Director), Adegoke Ayo Amos (Financial Secretary) and Balogun Adeboye (Public Relations Officer).
