Hon. AGF Salahuddeen, the member representing Omupo Constituency at the Kwara State House of Assembly, delivered an insightful speech as the Guest speaker yesterday at the Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin, during the opening of Freshers’ Week. Themed ‘Catching Them Young: Mitigating University Life Menaces through Early Engagement and Strategic Reforms’ the event focused on equipping students with the tools to navigate the challenges of university life.
Addressing a packed hall at the Old Moot Court, Hon. AGF Salahuddeen stated the importance of early intervention in guiding students away from societal and academic menaces such as cultism, drug abuse, and poor academic performance.
“The university community is a microcosm of society, and it is our responsibility as leaders to ensure young people are nurtured into responsible, productive individuals.” He urged university administrators to implement mentorship programs, life skills training, and extracurricular activities that promote leadership and accountability.
Drawing parallels with historical figures like Alexander the Great, Prophet Mohammed, and Jesus Christ, Hon. AGF Salahuddeen highlighted how youthful energy, when positively harnessed, has the power to transform societies.
He also called for reforms to make education more inclusive and relevant while advocating for leveraging technology to connect students with resources such as online mentorship and career guidance.
Hon. AGF Salahuddeen concluded by challenging educators, policymakers, and community leaders to lead by example, fostering a culture of integrity, hard work, and civic responsibility. He commended the University of Ilorin for its commitment to shaping future leaders and urged students to take full advantage of the opportunities provided during Freshers’ Week.
