The Broiler Farmers Network has cautioned Frozen Food operators, offtakers to stop exploitation on hard-working farmers. This is contained in a statement issued by Organization able signed by the President, Mr. Kolade M O and Director of Public Relations, Mr. Ogunmokun Damilola.
The statement reads in Full
“As the Broiler Farmers Network, we believe that an issue that must be addressed is the recent trend of frozen food operators shortchanging farmers in an attempt to increase their profit margins. While we understand the need for businesses to make a profit, this should not come at the cost of exploiting hard-working farmers.
We have received numerous reports from our members regarding some wicked off-takers who purchase broiler chickens at very low prices and sell them at exorbitant rates. This leaves the farmers with losses, as they are unable to make up for the actual cost of raising the birds. It is important to note that these broiler farmers work tirelessly to supply quality and healthy birds to the market, and they deserve to be compensated fairly.
Therefore, we call on all frozen food operators and middlemen to desist from purchasing broiler chickens or other agricultural produce at unjust prices. This practice adversely affects the entire farming community and contributes to the issue of food insecurity. We also call on consumers to support local farmers by purchasing locally produced products rather than imported ones.
Furthermore, we declare our support for the removal of fuel subsidies by the Federal Government, as this will provide a level playing field for all players in the market. However, we urge the government to come to the aid of farmers by providing flexible credit facilities, storage facilities, and other forms of support to cushion the effect of subsidy removal on farmers. This will enable them to continue to provide healthy food for the nation and also create employment opportunities.
In conclusion, let us all work together to ensure that the agricultural sector in Nigeria thrives. Let us support local farmers and discourage practices that exploit them. We call on both the government and private sector to prioritize the welfare of farmers and realize that their wellbeing is essential to the growth and development of the country.”
