In a compelling speech delivered on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, Chief Abdulateef Kunle Ajeigbe, the Coordinator of the Stakeholders Forum for Good Governance in Offa Local Government Area of Kwara State, called for urgent action to address local government autonomy and the future of Offa. Speaking before a gathering of local dignitaries, community members, and the press, Chief Ajeigbe emphasized the need for electing credible leaders committed to the development and prosperity of the community.

Highlighting the Supreme Court’s recent verdict affirming financial autonomy for Nigeria’s 774 local governments, Chief Ajeigbe described it as a pivotal moment that could fundamentally reshape local governance across the nation. He lamented the prolonged neglect and mismanagement of Offa Local Government, pointing out that despite over 9 billion Naira accruing to the local government between January 2019 and June 2024, there has been little to no visible development.

Chief Ajeigbe criticized the current state governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, for not conducting any local government elections during his six-year tenure, which he argued stifled democratic principles and local governance. He called on all political factions, community members, and leaders to unite and support a candidate who truly has the community’s best interests at heart in the upcoming local government elections scheduled for September 21.

The speech underscored the importance of local government autonomy in ensuring that resources are effectively utilized to provide essential socio-economic services. Chief Ajeigbe urged the community to reject candidates imposed by external interests and instead elect leaders who are accountable, transparent, and dedicated to the community’s progress.

The call to action was clear: for Offa Local Government to thrive, it needs leaders who can leverage the granted autonomy to bring tangible development and improve the quality of life for all residents. Chief Ajeigbe’s speech was a rallying cry for the community to come together and ensure that the upcoming elections mark a new chapter of good governance and prosperity for Offa.
