Ex-Commissioner for Works Media Aide Speaks Out

In a puzzling turn of events, questions about the competence and integrity of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) have emerged. These questions have arisen in the wake of conflicting reports surrounding COREN’s access to the General Babatunde Idiagbon Flyover in Tanke, Ilorin.

On January 27, 2023, the Kwara State Technical Committee of COREN vehemently denied allegations that they were denied entry to the flyover site by the Ministry of Works. Engr. Bashir Atunde Lawal, FNSE, the State Chairman of COREN, publicly dismissed these claims as false, baseless, and nothing more than propaganda.

However, in a recent press statement titled “Kwara Ex-Commissioner for Works, Iliasu is Lying: We Are Yet to Certify Bridge – COREN Fires Back,” the council took a different stance. This statement directly contradicts a publication by JUSTEVENT Online on January 27, 2023, titled “COREN Debunks Rumor, Advises People to Shun Misconception:
They Claim They Have Access to the General Babatunde Idiagbon Flyover in Tanke.”

The glaring inconsistency between these statements raises concerns about COREN’s transparency, functionality, and overall integrity. Such disputes over access to a significant infrastructure project undermine the credibility of regulatory bodies like COREN and cast doubt on their ability to fulfill their roles effectively.

As the controversy continues to unfold, the public eagerly awaits clarification from COREN regarding the true nature of their involvement with the Tanke Flyover project. This situation underscores the vital importance of transparency and consistency in the actions and statements of organizations entrusted with regulating engineering practices in Nigeria.
