Billionaire tech mogul, Elon Musk, has stated that a cyberattack that crippled his social media platform, X, on Monday appears to have originated in Ukraine.

Speaking in an interview with Fox Business Network, Musk described the attack as “massive” and suggested it was launched by a “coordinated group” or even a foreign nation.

The outage, which began around 5:30am ET, left users worldwide struggling to access the platform, with many reporting login issues and error messages.

“We’re not exactly sure what happened, but there was a massive cyberattack to try to bring down the X system with IP addresses originating in the Ukraine area,” Musk said during the interview.Musk had earlier acknowledged the attack in a post on X, confirming that the platform was targeted.

He hinted that the scale of the assault suggested it was not the work of ordinary hackers but of a well-organised entity.

His suspicions gained traction when a hacker group known as Dark Storm Team took credit for the attack in a post on X.

Cybersecurity firm SpyoSecure later reported that it had spoken to a leader of the group, who confirmed they had launched a Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack against the platform.

A DDoS attack works by flooding a website with artificial traffic, overwhelming its servers and causing the site to slow down or crash completely.

The attack on X left many users unable to access their accounts or load posts, with those already logged in seeing error messages stating, “Something went wrong, try reloading.”
