Following the decision of the Management of Gombe State University to reconvene 100 level students for academic purposes, the institution’s branch of Academic Staff Union Universities says only the Senate of the institution has the right to make such approval.
According to the statement issued by the Chairman, Dr. Suleiman Jauro and the Secretary, Mohammed Ndogu, the branch supports ASUU’s roll-over strike, adding that the industrial action remains intact in the institution.
Our correspondent reports that ASUU, since Monday, February 14, 2022, at the University of Lagos, Nigeria, had embarked on industrial action due to failure of the Federal Government to meet its agreement.
The statement partly read, “The attention of the union has been drawn to a purported circular by the management of the university asking 100 level students to resume studies and some widely circulated newspaper publications that academic activities have resumed in Gombe State University. This information in the circulated newspaper publication is wrong.
“We also wish to observe that according to the Gombe State University Bye-laws, only the Senate is vested with the powers to approve calendar for the commencement and end of academic activities of the university, and this has not happened in the university as of today.”
While urging students to conserve their energy and resources, the branch noted that for the sake of better university system its members would remain resolute to the positive end, adding that members would not partake in the purported return of 100 level students.
“Furthermore, I wish to categorically inform the general public that lecturers in Gombe State University are in full compliance with the directive of the National Executive Council of ASUU to prosecute the roll-over strike to its logical conclusion for a better university system.
“Lecturers under the auspices of ASUU Gombe State University Chapter will not partake in any academic activities until the current national roll-over strike action is vacated, by God’s grace. Students and Parents/Guardians may wish to use this information wisely to conserve their time, energy and meagre resources please,” the statement added.
