The leadership of the Jama’atu Nasril Islam has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to extend the collection of the Permanent Voter Cards for another 10 days.

The body, led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar lll, who is also the spiritual leader of Nigerian Muslims, said this was in order to avoid disenfranchising eligible voters.

The JNI Secretary-General, Dr Khalid Abubakar-Aliyu, in an interview with The PUNCH, said this on Monday.

He said, “Since it is a reality that the collection has been so cumbersome, coupled with the poor turnout of the people and the slow issuance of the PVCs by the electoral umpire, I think it calls for a very careful consideration, I mean looking at the issue.

“And as long as we have some days to elections, I think it’s only reasonable that the preparation for the election can go hand-in-hand with the extension even for a week or 10 days since the election is going to be on February 25.

“I don’t think there’s anything wrong if the electoral umpire can still extend the deadline. I think it’s important.”
