Honourable Sheu Usman Ndanusa, the Commissioner for Environment and Forestry in Kwara State, has discussed the recent flooding issue during an interview with a correspondent from PRUDENT WATCH. He attributed the heavy rainfall, which is not only affecting Kwara but the entire nation, to climate change. The Commissioner emphasized that human behavior and activities, such as improper waste disposal and construction on waterways, play a significant role in exacerbating the flooding situation.
Hon. Ndanusa confirmed that Kwara State is already experiencing heavy rainfall, which aligns with weather predictions. In response to the flooding issue, proactive measures are being taken by the state government.
To address the situation, the Government is actively involved in dredging the state’s rivers and improving drainage systems in various areas across all sixteen local governments. Additionally, they have made an appeal to the Federal Government for assistance in dredging River Niger and completing the ongoing dredging of Asa River in Ilorin.
Hon. Ndanusa also addressed concerns regarding road bins, assuring that the ministry closely monitors them and provides contact numbers for reporting when the bins are full. The ministry remains dedicated to effectively managing the situation.
Considering the expected continuation of heavy rains, Hon. Ndanusa advised residents living near rivers and those who have constructed on waterways to prioritize their safety and consider relocating from these areas for their well-being.
