Earlier yesterday, The Postgraduate Students’ Association (POGSASS) of Unilorin organized a Research Grant Finale and Orientation for Fresh Postgraduate Students today.
This event followed an earlier call for grant proposals from postgraduate students. After a thorough screening process, judges were selected from the institution’s lecturers to identify successful candidates for these prestigious grants.
Sen. Sadiq Sulaiman Umar, the Senator representing Kwara North in the 10th National Assembly, proudly sponsored the research grant awards.
The grant was given to six students from each academic level of the postgraduate school, both at the master’s and doctorate levels. For the master’s level, the awards were 200,000 Naira for the first position, 150,000 Naira for the second, and 100,000 Naira for the third. For the Ph.D. level, the first position received 300,000 Naira, the second 200,000 Naira, and the third 150,000 Naira.
In his opening remarks, POGSASS president, Abdullahi Ishiaq Toyin, welcomed the fresh postgraduate students to the school of postgraduate studies and assured them they would enjoy the purpose for which they came. He also appreciated the presence of the personalities who took time out of their busy schedules to be at the program.
“Lastly, I appreciate the effort and support of Hon. Sadiq Sulaiman Umar for extending his generosity to the postgraduate students of Unilorin. May you be rewarded,” he said.
In his part, The representative of the Vice-Chancellor of Unilorin, spoke about the measures they have been putting in place to ensure postgraduate students at Unilorin have a smooth learning experience and do not exceed the designated time for their programs.
“We welcome you to one of the best universities in this age. If you play your part as you are supposed to, we can ensure you will finish on time. This administration is working on that.”
“This administration will ensure that your work is published, both at the Master’s and Ph.D. levels. Your program aims to solve societal problems, and that’s one reason you have to get your papers published. This administration will also ensure you are globally relevant,” he added before declaring the floor open for orientation.
The Dean of the Postgraduate School at Unilorin, Professor Bamidele Victor Owoyele, encouraged the fresh postgraduate students to focus on their purpose. He said it takes two to tango, and if the postgraduate school is doing its best to ensure your swift learning, you should also give your best.
Hon. Alhassan Yahyah Bagudu, representing Sen. Sadiq Umar Sulaiman, stated in his speech that Senator Sadiq sent his words to the Beneficiary of the Grant, urging them to use it responsibly and effectively to benefit society and humanity.
The winner of the grant in the Ph.D. section, Mr. Jimoh Lukman, on behalf of the Beneficiaries, appreciate the grant support from Sen. Sadiq and assured that it would be judiciously used.
“I appreciate the school for providing us with this opportunity, and the Dean of PG for his excellent mentoring,” he concluded.
