The Federal Government through the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has said that the government has rehabilitated 64 internal roads in various federal tertiary institutions in the country.

Fashola, who was represented by an official in the office of the Federal Road Controller in Edo State, Ademola Razak, stated this at the handover of the reclaimed road (which was destroyed by erosion) at the Site B of the University of Benin, Ugbowo campus on Wednesday.

He explained, “We have successfully intervened in 64 internal road projects in various federal tertiary institutions and handed over a total of 46 as of March 2022.

We now have another 18 ready to be handed over while we were attending to 19 roads in other institutions across the country making it a total of 83 roads.

“It is undeniable that the quality of education will be impacted by the quality of Infrastructures. Those who doubt it should simply listen to some of the feedback from students in the schools, where this type of Intervention has taken place.”

Fashola stressed that during the construction work, more than 50 persons were employed thereby contributing to the job creation idea of the federal government.

He expressed hope that the university would now ensure that the asset is used properly, and not abused.

The Vice Chancellor of UNIBEN, Prof. Lilian Salami, commended the President, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), Minister Raji Fashola, Governor Godwin Obaseki and other key actors and stakeholders that made the project a reality for their support.

Prof. Salami noted that over 70 per cent of Site B in the University had been encroached.

She lamented that the encroachment is getting more hazardous and dangerous every day.

She also described Fashola as one of the Alumni of the institution that has contributed much to its progress.

She added, “I must commend the Federal Government and other stakeholders for this project. The road has been rehabilitated and this will help the school and adjourning communities to have access to good road,” she added.
