Kano State Hisbah Board has revealed reason for the cancellation of proposed marriage between Kano-based social media content creator, Idris Mai Wushirya, and his partner, Basira ‘Yar Guda.

According to the Board, the relationship, which was referred to it for formalisation, was not genuine but a ploy by both parties to escape legal consequences for earlier charges of immoral conduct.

The Deputy Commander of the Hisbah Board, Dr Mujahedeen Aminuddeen, confirmed the cancellation on Saturday.

“After our investigation, we discovered that the proposed marriage was not based on mutual understanding but rather an attempt to evade legal consequences. The board, therefore, resolved to cancel the wedding to prevent future conflict,” he said.

He noted that although both TikTokers had submitted blood samples to confirm medical compatibility, the process was suspended to avoid further complications. He added that the matter would be returned to court if it was not resolved.

The saga began after a Kano Magistrate Court, presided over by Magistrate Halima Wali, suspended her ruling on charges of immoral conduct filed against Wushirya and Yar Guda by the Kano State Censorship Board, following the release of a controversial video. In court, the duo openly confessed to being lovers and intending to marry.

The magistrate then gave the Hisbah Board a 60-day notice to perfect the marriage in line with Islamic traditions, with a directive to return the case to court if the union did not hold.

The ruling sparked controversy, with critics alleging it amounted to a forced marriage order.

The Kano State Judiciary, however, swiftly dismissed the claim of forced marriage, describing it as a gross misinterpretation of the proceedings.

Judiciary spokesperson, Baba Jibo, clarified the court’s action: “Let me restate, for emphasis, that Magistrate Wali never ruled on any forced marriage case.

The record of proceedings is available for anyone to verify. What the court did was to suspend its ruling and, for the sake of fairness, refer the two TikTokers to Hisbah to formalise their marriage.”

Jibo explained that the decision followed the defendants’ own confession in court.“For clarity, both TikTokers told the court they love each other.

In fact, the lady, Bashira Yar Guda, stated on the record that she would marry Idris only if he provided his own accommodation, not a rented house.

It was based on this confession that the court suspended its ruling to allow the marriage process to hold,” Jibo stated.
