Delta South senatorial candidate of the New Nigerian People’s Party, Commodore Omatseye Nesiama (retd.), on Monday visited flood victims at Igbide and Ofagbe communities in Isoko South and Isoko North local government areas of the state and donated some relief materials to cushion the effects on them.

Items donated to the victims by the visiting senatorial candidate included tubers of yams, loaves of bread, bags of garri, rice, salt, sugar, noodles, spaghetti, vegetable oil, onions, pepper pastes, biscuits as well as detergents and toiletries.

PUNCH Metro noted that most residents of the two flood ravaged communities had deserted their homes following the devastating effect on their buildings.

In Ofagbe community, the NYSC Corpers lodge, Gospel Church of Christ, Oketa Grammar School and the Ofagbe District Customary Court, among others, were completely submerged.

Also, the Ebe Primary School in Ovrode, a nearby community leading to Ofagbe, was swallowed by the ravaging flood. The only access into the communities were boats at the cost of N1,000 per passenger.

Speaking during his visit, Nesiama urged politicians and well meaning individuals to put politics aside irrespective of their political affiliation and render help to the flood victims who were visibly suffering.

Nesiama, who was flanked by the NNPP Delta State House of Assembly Candidate, Isoko North Constituency, Dr. Daniel Uroghome, also called on the Federal ànd Delta State governments to immediately put in measures that would mitigate the perennial flood as well as its effect on the people.

He said, “The people should find succour. People should be able to eat, get shelter. IDP camps should be opened for free.”

Nesiama lamented the damage the flood had caused especially in the two Delta communities submitting that “it is most pathetic.”

Receiving the relief materials on behalf of Igbide people, Delta State Chairman of NNPP, Chief Friday Efetobor, appreciated Nesiama for the gesture just as he further beckoned on the federal and state governments to come to their rescue.

Efetobor remarked, “We need help from them. We need rescue now. You can see my village people, they are here.

“So, let me appreciate the incoming senator at least your message will get to my people in my village, I want to appreciate you so much. Thank you very much for your rescue, God bless you.”

Two of the flood victims from Ofagbe community, Baby Oviemuno and Bright Atara also appreciated Nesiama for the relief materials donated to them.

They disclosed that the flood wreaked havoc on the communities explaining that virtually all buildings and farmlands were destroyed leaving them in hunger as they relocated from their homes, like many others.

The Chairman of Ofagbe community, Alhaji Musa Oviemuno while receiving the relief materials for victims in his community noted that many buildings in the clan were submerged by the flood.

Oviemuno who was flanked by the Vigilante Chairman of Ofagbe Community, Onyema Jerry, also expressed gratitude to the senatorial candidate and his entourage for the solidarity visit and the donations.
