US midterm elections begin, Republicans eye Congress

People across the US are casting their votes in the midterm elections to determine who controls the US Congress.

For two years, both chambers – the House of Representatives and the Senate – have been controlled by Democrats, although the Republicans are predicted to take the House while Senate control is still uncertain and too close to call

For President Joe Biden, the outcome of these midterm polls will have a major impact on his remaining two years in office as losing either chamber would hinder his agenda, since having the Democrats control of the Senate has been helpful for him in passing laws.

All 435 seats in the US House of Representatives, about a third (35 of 100 seats) of the Senate and key state governorships are up for grabs.

Results would start coming in after polls close in the evening, US time.
